History of Indian Railway The Indian Railway have one of the major transportation services in India. Indian Railway are entirely owned and managed by the Central Government but there is separation of railway finances from generala revenue. At present, Indian Railway system growing in such a manner that it will compare with the developed countries Railway System. India is the first country in Asia where the railway system introduced in the British period. This was established during the period of Lord Dalhousie. The first railway track came into being on 16th April, 1853 from Bombay to Thane. From there to unward India not looking back.



Railway Network Zones



There are nine Railway Zones which constituted by the Indian Railways.
  1. The Central Railway Zone
  2. The Eastern Railway Zone
  3. The Northern Railway Zone
  4. The North-Eastarn Railway Zone
  5. The Northeast Frontier Railway Zone
  6. The South Central Railway Zone
  7. The Southern Railway Zone
  8. The South Eastern Railway Zone
  9. The Western Railway Zone



There are 56 railway divisions on the Indian Railway. Each zone has got five or six or more divisions. Some divisions have 500 route-killometers (Kms) and some as much as 1900 Kms.
